Music Review: “God’s Plan”

“God’s Plan” is one of Drake’s most famous and popular singles, released in 2018 as a part of the EP, “Scary Hours” and the lead single of his fifth studio album, “Scorpion.” The song was critically acclaimed and debuted #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and topped the charts in 14 countries including the UK, Canada and Australia. The song was 2018’s most streamed song, reaching 1.5 billion streams across all platforms. God’s Plan was nominated for dozens of awards including three Grammys, and won the Grammy for Best Rap Song.

Musically, “God’s Plan” contains a dark and moody beat, captivating the listener from the beginning of the song to the end and complimenting Drake’s lyrics, allowing his words to gain depth and further evoke emotion. The song is centered off the beat, highlighted by a prevalent bassline, minimal percussion and a piano riff allowing for a medley that draws in listeners while also creating a hypnotic beat that keeps listeners attentive and engulfed in the music. “God’s Plan” features all the elements that Drake is known for, creating an emotional and breathtaking performance.

Lyrically, “God’s Plan” showcases Drake’s journey as an artist and focuses on the message of perseverance, redemption, and pushing past limits and expectations to be the best person you can be, and the most successful person you can be. The song also references a higher power in life, mentioned in the name of the song, guiding Drake in his journey and singing to his listeners that everything happens for a reason, and that is a part of the journey of life. Arguably the most memorable part of the song mentions the lyrics, “Bad things; It’s a lot of bad things; That they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’; They wishin’ on me,” tie together the song and the message of living life to the fullest.

All in all, “God’s Plan” is a captivating and emotional single that really hypnotizes listeners by drawing them into a minimalist musical world, and showcasing the struggles in life that can lead the biggest triumphs as well. The moody lyrics and fast beat allow Drake to really shine in this single, adding it to his already decorated collection of generation-defining rap songs.
